Fred Chaney is a former Australian politician and long-standing advocate for Indigenous rights. Born in Perth in 1941, he served as a Liberal Senator for Western Australia from 1974 to 1990 and as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1990 to 1993. Between 1978 and 1980, he was the Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. After leaving politics, Chaney co-chaired Reconciliation Australia and served on the National Native Title Tribunal. He has also been involved with numerous Indigenous related organisations including the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation, Desert Knowledge Australia, the Juugan Gorge Foundation and the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia . In 2014, he was named Senior Australian of the Year.
